Sports venues hoping to attract Olympic athletes

THE schools and leisure centres around Surrey which could play host to the world’s top athletes in the run up to the 2012 Olympics have been selected.

More than 600 sports facilities nationwide have been chosen to appear in a Pre-Games Training Camp Guide, which will give foreign teams and athletes a selection of venues to train at up to two years in advance of the London games.

Some of Surrey’s best venues are among the 130 selected from south-east England.

The Elmbridge Xcel leisure complex in Walton will offer basketball and fencing facilities, while Guildford Spectrum and Guildford Lido will offer badminton, table tennis, judo and wrestling.

The county’s schools could also have visiting athletes, with Epsom College offering archery and fencing and St George’s School in Weybridge catering for athletics and hockey.

The Woking borough has the most venues in the guide, with the town's amateur boxing club, athletics club and football club in line to welcome Olympians from all over the world.

  • Guildford Spectrum and Guildford Lido: archery, badminton, basketball, fencing, trampoline, judo, table tennis, indoor volleyball, wrestling
  • Littleton Manor Farm, Reigate: equestrian
  • King Edward's School, Witley: archery
  • National Shooting Centre, Bisley: shooting
  • St George's College, Weybridge: archery, athletics, hockey
  • St John's School, Leatherhead: archery
  • Woking Amateur Boxing Club: boxing
  • Woking Athletics Club: athletics
  • Woking Football Club: football
  • Woking Gymnastics Club: gymnastics, trampoline
  • Woking Leisure Centre: fencing

The guide will be distributed at this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
