Salute for Headley Court's injured war heroes Princes William and Harry are patrons of City Salute THOUSANDS of people gathered outside St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Wednesday evening to salute the brave men and women who have been injured at war.
Money raised from the sunset pageant, which was attended by Princes William and Harry, will help the work of charity Help for Heroes, which aims to raise £6m for a new swimming pool and gym at the Headley Court rehabilitation centre near Leatherhead.
The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, which has set up an accommodation unit in nearby Ashtead for relatives of those recovering at Headley Court, will also benefit from the event.
Hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, the City Salute saw the Band of the HM Royal Marines marching through Temple Bar, a flypast and aerial display by the RAF and a spectacular light show projected on to St Paul’s Cathedral.
Help for Heroes appeal chairman Bryn Parry said: "The whole event was incredible and very emotional, I think Jeremy Clarkson was quite choked at one point."
Mr Parry said he thought the pageant had raised about £250,000 towards the appeal.
“We’ve raised over £5.5m towards our initial £6m target so we’re getting there. I can’t wait," he added. First printed in:
