HEALTH Secretary Alan Johnson has officially opened a cancer screening unit serving 13 million people across the south of England.

Mr Johnson spent Thursday morning touring the southern hub of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, which is based at the University of Surrey's Postgraduate Medical School in Guildford.

The hub, which began its work in 2006, is a partnership between the university and Royal Surrey County Hospital.

It will eventually screen people living in counties from Cornwall to Kent and up to Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

“I’m enormously impressed by what I’ve seen here,” Mr Johnson said.

“This is a great coalition between the NHS and the University of Surrey. This is a world class facility and it’s a world first.”

During his visit, Mr Johnson spent time speaking to clinicians at the hub as well as patients who have received treatment.
