Train strikes suspended following new talks

STRIKES planned for next week on South West Trains’ (SWT) services have been called off by Aslef, the train drivers’ union.

Four days of industrial action had been proposed, starting from Monday, March 31, but the strikes have been suspended following new talks.

A draft agreement was reached on the lengths of shifts worked by train drivers, and three options put forward by South West Trains over new contracts will be fully considered by the union at its executive meeting in mid-April.

"This will be followed by a referendum of Aslef members in SWT to judge its acceptability," a statement said.

"At that stage the action will be re-imposed or called off."

Stewart Palmer, managing director of South West Trains, said: “I am very pleased Aslef has suspended the strike action as this would have caused disruption for thousands.

“Passengers can expect a normal service next week and I am delighted they will not be inconvenienced.”
