The David Johnston Trio are joined by guests, the sax and clarinet-playing Vic Ash and trombonist Andy Wood for a date at Dorking’s Watermill Jazz Club on Thursday, May 15. Vic has been prominent on the jazz scene since the early 1950s, working with John Dankworth before joining Frank Sinatra’s orchestra for UK and European tours. He’s a former member of the BBC Big Band, while Andy Wood is still a member. They are aided by Johnston on piano, Val Manix on double bass and Trevor Tompkins on drums. Chris Barber celebrates his 59th year as a band leader with a new album, I Can’t Stop Now, and a tour with the Big Chris Barber Band which reaches Dorking Halls on Saturday, May 17. The man responsible for introducing some of the biggest names in blues to British audiences in the 1950s is still  blowing his trombone in the company of top musicians – joining him for the Dorking date are Pat Halcox, John Slaughter, Richard Exall, Mike “Magic” Henry, John Service, Tony Carter, Mike Snelling, Joe Farler, John Sutton and Dave Green. Folk, Roots, Country and Blues

Superb singer and songwriter Clive Gregson appears at Farncombe Music Club at St John’s Church in St John’s Street on Friday, May 9. The Mancunian, former Any Trouble frontman, Richard Thompson Band member and one-time partner of Christine Collister – who appears in Farncombe in September – is based in Nashville these days, but regularly returns home to tour. Highly talented and versatile guitarist Pete Smith whose performances feature everything from jazz, blues and ragtime to folk, calypso, baroque and bluegrass, returns to Claygate’s Ram Folk Club on Friday, May 9. And on Friday, May 16, the club at the Foley Arms in Hare Lane plays host to the legendary Tannahill Weavers, one of the all time great Scottish bands. Superb Texan bluesman Sherman Robertson returns to Cranleigh Arts Centre on Saturday, May 10, for what promises to be another terrific night of soulful blues music. Backed by Bluesmove, Robertson – who played on Paul Simon’s legendary Gracelands album – has a voice that’s been compared to Robert Cray (many reckon he’s a whole lot better, especially live), while his stinging guitar playing is a joy to behold. A double helping of blues and R&B has been lined up at the Three Lions in Farncombe this weekend, courtesy of Funky Dory on Saturday, May 10, and Fivefield House on Sunday, May 11. Classical, choral groups and concert bands

The Occam Singers are performing Scarlatti’s St Cecilia Mass and Dixit Dominus, with the Adagio for Strings by Albinoni, on Saturday, May 10, in Holy Trinity Church, Guildford, at 7.30pm. The concert is in aid of Medical Aid for Free Romania, and will be conducted by David Gibson with the New London Sinfonia.
