  • Until Friday, May 16. Fulvens Hanger, Peaslake, opens for the National Gardens Scheme from 11am to 5pm. An exciting three-acre woodland garden brought back from neglect. This stylish garden surrounds a newly built Huf house. There is a lovely bluebell walk and many recent specimen plantings. Admission £3, children free. Homemade teas, plant sales, wheelchair access, no dogs.

 

  • Saturday, May 17. Guildford Museum is celebrating Museums at Night Weekend with Wallace and Gromit. Museums up and down the UK will also be supporting Wrong Trousers Day, the annual event organised by The Wallace and Gromit Children’s Foundation to raise money for sick children in hospitals and hospices around the UK. Guildford Museum will join the celebrations from 5pm to 7pm with with the incredible inventions treasure hunt, refreshments, quiz and film showing of Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers and shorts of Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep.   • Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 25. Enjoy a guided walk at Claremont Landscape Gardens in Esher looking at the history of Claremont from 5.15pm from 2pm. Normal admission charges apply. Learn to sketch in the garden on Thursday, May 15 and 22, from 10.30am to noon. Suitable for all abilities. Normal admission charges plus £5 per session. On Saturday, May 17, there will be a bat walk with the Surrey Bat Group from 8.30pm to 10pm. Adult: £6, child £3. Details: 01372 467806.

 

  • Sunday, May 18. Fitness and fundraising for the whole family with the annual Towpath Trundle will be taking place in aid of the Princess Alice Hospice. Take either a four-mile or eight-mile trundle from Sadlers Rise, Molesey, or Walton Bridge. Entry is £6 adults; £3 under 16s; £12 family; under fives free.   • Sunday, May 18. Wheels of Steel, sponsored by Fidelity International. Put your pedalling power behind this event! Family cycle ride starting and finishing at The Children’s Trust, Tadworth Court, Tadworth. Timings for rides commence from 9.45 am. We need cyclists to join up NOW!   • Saturday, May 24. The Horley Society of Artists will be holding an exhibition of paintings at the St John’s Hall, Massetts Road, Horley, from 10.30am until 4pm. The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to see the work of the members. There is a wide range of subjects and painting styles to interest all tastes. Entrance is free.   • Until Saturday, May 24. The Wey Valley Workshop will be holding an exhibition entitled Stitches in Time at Guildford House Gallery in the High Street. Members of Wey Valley will be on hand daily between 10.30am and 12.30pm giving demonstrations on a variety of embroidery techniques, and the exhibition covers both the history of the skill as well as the modern materials and techniques.   • Until Saturday, May 31. Seeds of Hope Children’s Garden exhibition, telling the story of this unique garden from conception to completion, will be on show at Guildford Cathedral.

  • Until Sunday, June 15. A hands-on journey into the world of light and colour entitled Optical Odyssey will be held at The Lightbox in Chobham Road, Woking, June 15. Enter ‘squirtual reality’ with the incredible Art Machine – fire virtual paint at a giant screen to create amazing coloured patterns. Use lenses, lights and visual illusions to investigate the way that your eyes work and why things are not always what they seem. All exhibition visitors will receive a free glow-stick and activity guide. Tickets: £2, under 3 free.

 

  • Until June 22. Architecture 08 Festival. In Guildford there are lots of events to enjoy, starting with the annual architecture lecture at the University of Surrey. There will be exhibitions, lunchtime talks, and walks plus the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice in The Guildford Society’s Design Awards.
